Hi friends! I’m here to show off one of my newest Cameron Button Ups from @helens__closet (I now have three! 🥰). I made one last year to develop some tutorials for Helen’s blog (you can see it a few posts back), and it instantly went into heavy rotation in my wardrobe. The fit is spot on for me and it’s so nice to have an easy layering piece.

Unfortunately, my first one has since shrunk with repeated washings—at the same time that I’ve gone up a size or two. Alas, I needed to make myself some new ones. Like my first, this cotton flannel is also from @joann_stores, but it behaved much more kindly this time. I was able to pattern match the bodice and sleeve pieces, although I didn’t bother with the cuffs or sleeve placket. I also cut the yokes and the pocket on the bias to avoid worrying about pattern matching, and I prefer the visual effect more anyway.

Despite having washed and pre-dried this fabric twice (!) to avoid shrinkage, it has continued to shrink in the time since I took these photos. 😂 I'm glad I sized up to account for this possibility, but I wish I would have gone up two sizes instead. Oh well! It still fits, and I suspect this is just a reality to accept with 100% cotton flannel.

All in all, I'm super proud of how this one turned out. I've sewn quite a few button up shirts at this point (Cameron, Fougere, Fairfield, Myosotis . . . to name a few), and I can honestly say they get a little bit better every time. Some of that is an increased willingness to hand sew and baste when necessary (especially around the collar), but a lot of it is just practice and repetition.

Anywho! This is a size 6 with no adjustments. My current measurements are 34"/29"/39". I also made a green plaid version— which maybe one day I will photograph and post . . . but I'm so inconsistent about sharing these days, who knows. 🤷‍♀️

I am back with another button-up! This time, version A of the Fougère Overshirt from @deer_and_doe_patterns. 🤍

Believe or not, this was a bit of a palette cleansing project for me. I love the more technical details of a button up shirt (the straight lines! the top stitching!), and because this is an overshirt I didn’t have to worry an iota about fit adjustments. It was a nice change of pace from my anxiety about getting the perfect fit on the Saguaro set. 😬

It's also a project I've been looking forward to making since it was released. Deer&Doe is a client of mine so I am not without bias, but there are a few things that I think set Fougère apart from other button-ups on the market:

1️⃣ The dramatic hem, finished with a facing so it's easy to achieve a nice result. Because the serged finish is visible, I had fun with this detail and tried a "pastel sprinkles" thread from Wawak. 🌈

2️⃣ The 3-piece sleeve construction. Unfortunately this is a detail I didn’t manage to get a great photo of, but it certainly was fun to sew! Any excuse to top stitch is a good one IMO, and it also meant that these sleeves feature a “vent” rather than a true placket. Like the hem facing, I found the vent quite a bit easier to sew than a true placket and I very much enjoyed trying a new technique.

3️⃣ The dropped armholes. Because this pattern is intended as an overshirt it features a lower armhole depth to make wearing it over other garments easier. Perhaps not what you want in a standard button-up, but for an overshirt/jacket it’s a nice touch.

I also adore this fabric. It’s the Telio viscose/linen slub that all the indie shops seem to carry, and it's officially my favorite fiber to work with. When I saw Sylvia's Fougère (@theravelout) I knew it was what I wanted to use for my own version. 😍 This particular fabric is from @corefabrics, and I like it so much that I’ve already ordered more to make a matching pair of Genêt Shorts.

I made Version A in a size 38 with no adjustments. My current measurements are 34"/29"/39". Fougère is available in sizes 34-60 (32"-58" bust).
